Course Overview:

The Rites of Passage program is a transformative educational journey designed to address historical inaccuracies, promote cultural awareness, and empower high school students. This 13-week course, followed by a life-changing 10-day trip to Ghana, challenges misconceptions and fosters a deep connection to African American history.

Course Objectives: Rediscovering African American History
  • Debunk Misconceptions: Challenge the notion that slaves were treated fairly and confront the misrepresentation of African American history in mainstream education.
  • ​Illuminate Resilience: Immerse participants in the rich and often overlooked history of African Americans, shedding light on their resilience, contributions, and struggles.
  • ​Forge Cultural Bonds: Through the 10-day trip to Ghana, bridge the gap between the past and present, allowing students to witness the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade and experience cultural immersion.

  • 13-Week Curriculum: Dive into a comprehensive understanding of African American history, exploring the journey, achievements, and challenges of our ancestors.
  • ​Credit: Stamford Public high school students will receive 1 full credit which will satisfy their Mastery-Based Learning credit required for high school graduation.
  • Empowerment: Instill resilience, confidence, and a sense of purpose as students become advocates for accurate history and the importance of African American heritage.
  • Ghanaian Immersion: The 10-day trip to Ghana serves as a pivotal experience, connecting participants with their heritage through cultural immersion and historical site visits.​

Rites of Passage will shape you into an informed and confident leader who can carry forth the torch of truth and unity. You will have the knowledge and courage to challenge false narratives and celebrate the significance of African American history.

Application Details:
Applications for 7th-12th grade students eager to embark on this 13-week course will open in October, 2024. Please note that residency in Stamford, CT, is not a requirement for participation but you will have to attend each class in person.
