The Rites of Passage program is a transformative leadership and cultural immersion experience for middle and high school students of allbackgrounds. The program originated in Stamford, CT, in 2004 and it is now available nationwide! Accepted students will engage in a dynamic 13-week virtual African American History course, followed by a 10-day journey to Ghana, West Africa.
At its core, Rites of Passage is designed to correct historical inaccuracies, promote cultural awareness, and empower the next generation of change makers through immersive learning rooted in truth, identity, and legacy.
Throughout the course, students explore the often-overlooked history of African Americans and the African diaspora—tracing a powerful lineage of resilience, innovation, and resistance from pre-colonial African empires to present-day movements. ROP is led by cultural scholars, creatives, and community leaders, participants gain the tools to reclaim their narrative, strengthen their self-awareness, and lead with purpose.
The journey to Ghana is a sacred and transformative capstone. Students walk the path of their ancestors—visiting sites such as Cape Coast Castle and the Door of No Return—while building global connections with local youth and cultural leaders. Through storytelling, service, and reflection, they deepen their understanding of heritage and will hopefully return home inspired to make an impact.
Whether a student joins to reconnect with their roots, build leadership skills, or expand their global perspective, the Rites of Passage program fosters confidence, critical consciousness, and a lasting commitment to truth.
