Ann Landers once said: “It is not what you do for children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings”. This is the mantra that rings through our heads as we think about the development of the DOPE Resource Center.
At almost every traffic light on the streets of Ghana, you are bound to meet underprivileged kids either begging for money or hawking at ungodly hours. This behavior persists all in the name of putting food on their own tables and sometimes even that of their parents/guardians. “The children are the future leaders” has gradually become so cliché that the children don’t even believe it anymore. What is a promised future without hope in the present? These kids embrace poverty daily not only because they are without money, but also because they are without hope. Imagine a center that poses as a safe haven with qualified mentors in place to help the youth combat their obstacles. A center that enhances their belief in exceeding their goals. A center that makes them smile at the future without fear. We know the DOPE Resource Center will be all that they need and more!
Goals
The DOPE Resource Center will keep the children occupied with various activities that will go a long way in making sure they become our prosperous future leaders. The change and opportunity will start with us! Nothing of its kind currently exists in Ghana and our center will also give us the ability to sponsor 5-10 students from the states to travel abroad annually (all expenses, paid). We will promote education, volunteerism, cultural experiences and we will continue to build the #DOPEGlobalMission (#DGM). The #DGM is to provide mentorship to children no matter where they are in the world! Not to mention, our center will create jobs for the locals and it will also generate revenue to run efficiently without relying on donations once it is built and fully operating/functioning. We can confidently say this because as it is being built we will be securing partnerships.
Plan
It is one thing to accomplish a goal and another to sustain it. Hence why, we have decided to rent out parts of the center to produce additional revenue. Our partnerships will consist of:
Mission Trips (Churches or Groups who like to travel and give back) – Paid
Study Abroad Opportunities (Universities/ Schools who offer study abroad opportunities to their students) – Paid
Sponsored Local Community Events (Free through secured grants and volunteers)
Conferences (small and large businesses) – Paid
Weddings/ Events – Paid
Education – Free courses will be taught in our classrooms, (Free through secured grants and volunteer instructors/ professors)
The plan is to have a 3-story building which will have a Gym, Kitchen/ Restaurant, Banquet Hall, Store and Reception on the Ground Floor.
The First Floor will have a Conference Room, Offices/ Cubicles, Classrooms, Lounge, Projector Room and a Studio Room. On the Second Floor, there would be 12 Rooms that sleep a total of 40 people (each room has a private balcony). There will also be a Lounge, Laundry (paid service), Concierge (24 hours).
The Outdoor Amenities are: Gated Facility w/security house (Security 24 hours), Garden, Gazebo, In-ground Pool, Tennis Court, Basketball Court, Soccer Field, Volleyball Court. All of our outdoor amenities can be rented.
While we know this is an extraordinary task, we have created such a presence in Ghana while gaining rapport/ support that we are destined to execute and run our center effectively. Our biggest task is to find land conducive to our project to assure accessibility for our visitors and local youth. Thankfully, we have our local Ghanaian agent on the ground helping us secure the perfect plot of land.
